Dear Friends,
In this section I will share with you some of my photos and reflections from my trip to gather information and organize for the Rachmaninov Society. I welcome your comments. We are also planning future trips to return to areas I have spoken about and ones that will give further understanding to the mission and research of the Rachmaninov Society.
Startez Nikolai
Sergei Rachmaninov was influenced by holy elders, staretzi of his time. The two main contempory Staretzi to his family and honored by his mentor Tolstoy of which we will first speak are Theophan of Tambov, and Amvrosi of Optima. On my trip to Russia to learn more about Rachmaninov connections in August/September 2005, we carried a copy of this portrait of the contemporary Startez, Nikolai who only died in 2002. Mila Panfilova made this portrait. The small picture was known to many and it opened doors for us in many places. The contemporay understanding and honor to elders who can know the future and are healers remains through this day in new generations of Starezi.
